Storage area networks (SANs) are rapidly evolving from early hub-based private loop architectures to switched fabric SANs. Although the performance and ease-of-management of switched-based SANs are far superior to earlier private loop installations, most storage environments need to maintain legacy installations of private loop while taking advantage of the benefits of switched fabric-based SANs. This paper explores the requirements, considerations and benefits of selecting the appropriate migration path for full-fabric deployment. (2000)
